Inaugurated in 2013, the EURAXESS Science Slam has become an annual event organized in ASEAN, Brazil, China, India, Japan and North America. Researchers from all over China joined in the first edition of the EURAXESS Science Slam. Six slammers competed in the exciting finals in front of 200 people in Beijing. In the end, Dr. Yu Yang from Wuhan University became China’s first EURAXESS Science Slammer and embarked on a trip to Europe.

In 2014 again, Wang Yanting from Beijing University's National Institute of Drug Dependence won the audience over with her "Story of Addiction" and in June 2015 went to Europe for a scientific tour!

We were all grateful to all the brilliant finalists, enthusiastic public, swirling waiters and waitresses, cool sound technicians, authentic kung fu masters and distinguished jury members for a memorable evening!

Pigs don't Cry

This is a subbmission to the EURAXESS Science Slam in ASEAN (South East Asia) 2013. The video was submitted by Jibby Namprachan. It's a good example of an unconventional way to communicate scientific research in entertaining way through music.

'A story about ladybirds' Sally Le Page

Sally Le Page pits bug vs bug in a ladybird Battle Royale that will determine the future of the species. Tense stuff from the first Oxford Science Slam. Good example of captivating science communicating through story-telling.

'How C-BASS will help us understand the very first moments of creation'

Another great slam from the Oxford Science Slam. Luke Jew gives the audience insight into the work of a researcher in the field of astronomy.

'The Power of Plant Farts' - Kurtis Baute

Kurtis Baute was the winner of the EURAXESS Science Slam 2014 in North America. His slam is a great example of how entertaining performance and using music, probs and audience participation can make a great way to communicate science.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does the Word "Slam" Mean?

A science slam is a competition at which researchers explain their original work with impact.

Each slam (performance) is judged by the audience and/or a jury based solely on certain criteria and nothing else.

An effective slam is a clear and entertaining explanation of your research that leaves a strong impression with the audience.

So What Is The Criteria?

  • Accessibility (e.g., understandability for a general audience, clarity)
  • Concept (e.g., if the structure or way of presenting is reinforcing the content/message)
  • Originality (e.g., a conference-style presentation is probably not very original)
  • Style/Execution (e.g., the "flow" of the slam, your confidence, the level of preparation)

What Does the Word "Slam" Mean?

If you check a dictionary, you can find many meanings for the word "slam", such as:

  • To slam (e.g., a door): To close or strike with strong impact (great force, loud noise)
  • To slam (e.g., an opinion): To attack verbally or criticize harshly
  • A poetry slam: A competition at which poets read or recite original work

So it's like a Poetry Slam?

Of course, the last meaning, Poetry Slam, is closest to the meaning of "science slam", although it is also about making a strong impact (figuratively speaking) on your audience, and making clear and strong statements about your ideas.

My Research Is Not In Science/Engineering, Can I Participate?

YES! The science slam is open to everyone who is doing research, also in fields that are not science. Law, literature, economics, medicine, agriculture, any field is fine.

Can Undergraduate Or Master Students Participate?

Even though we know undergraduates can do great research and can have great (English) science communication skills.

The Science Slam is aimed at researchers participating actively in research.

This includes PhDs, postdocs, researchers, Professors, researchers in industry and occasionally Masters Students if they are involved actively in a proper academic research. Unfortunately this does not include undergrads.

I want to participate, how can I register?

Go to the top of this page and click the button that says Register for Science Slam 2015.

Do I have to present in English?

Yes, but your level of English is NOT part of the evaluation. Only the 4 criteria above are evaluated, so if understandability and style are unaffected, any level is OK. Taking part in the Science Slam will help you improve your English science communication skills!

What is the minimum level of English?

There is no minimum level of English. If your slam is clear and smooth, it doesn't matter if you speak slowly or use very simple English. Sometimes slow & simple is even better!

About what should I slam?

The slam should be about your original research. It can be research you are doing now, or research you did before, but it has to be your own research.

Which part of your research you present, to what level of detail, and in what way, is all up to you. Please confirm with your supervisor to make sure there is no problem with confidentiality.

How long should my slam be?

The videos in the submission round should be no more than 5 minutes.

If you win the pre-round and get to the EURAXESS Science Slam China 2015 finals, your slam there has to be 10 minutes maximum.

Will there be a Questions & Answers session after my slam?

No. The slam is not like most academic presentations, it is more like a performance.

You will not get any questions from the audience (so you also don't have to give any answers).

Can I do a slam together with someone else?

Basically not; the slam is individual.

However, you can (try to) interact with the audience, as long as it is always clear that you are the slammer.

I have an original idea

for my slam, but I'm not sure if it is allowed. What should I do?

We welcome original ideas! Basically any concept is allowed, including for example singing, doing some experiments on stage, doing a role-play (alone), and even cool presentations with slides.

If you are still unsure, please do not hestiate to contact us via emal at china [at] euraxess.org.

Are there any Ethical Considerations?

  • Make sure your slam is safe (both for yourself and for the audience!
  • Make sure you hold the intellectual property rights to the research presented. (e.g., be careful of copyrights; present your original research)
  • Make sure you are allowed to disclose the content (the slam is public, so you shouldn't present sensitive or secret information)
  • Be fair and professional (e.g., don't discriminate; don't use abusive language; be respectful to others; show good manners)
